THE MEN of ATL -The climate of dating in Atlanta, 2009 for Same-gender Loving Men/Gay Men of Color; what is its effect on growing old alone.

Atlanta is the place to be in finding all types of men. There I said it and some would agree with that statement and then add a “but”. The “but” would be something to the affect “but most of them are dogs” even if they haven’t met most of them. In various writings and presentations I have given I've said you can t… Continue

WE CAN NO LONGER HIDE IN THE SHADOWS

As African- American same-gender-loving men and women, we can no longer allow our white gay brothers and sisters to champion our cause as they fight and campaign courageously for marriage equality and Civil Rights – things every American citizen, no matter what their sexual orientation, rightfully deserves! Many sa… Continue

So what is this thing called "Not settling for Less" and does it have us at home more?

First let me get this out the way. I have heard this following statement more than any other statement from single Same Gender-Loving/Black Gay Men of Color here in Atlanta, other cities I've visited or being on-line with guys from other countries and that is “Nobody's perfect". So there, I will not be talking… Continue

"Wrapped Up, Packed Up, Ribbon with a Bow on the End" and growing older, another Christmas alone

No I'm not starting Christmas too soon I'm just keeping up with society's early start of the holiday. Some of us are already thinking about Christmas, even window shopping or buying gifts for our close friends and for even for ourselves. Now it's a given that many of us purchase Christmas gifts for our f… Continue

1 day before my solo cruise

As I finish packing for my next solo cruise, I find myself getting more excited. Its been a rough couple of weeks at work and my timing could not have been better. A few weeks ago, Carnival added "My Time Dining". This means that you are no longer confined to early or late seating for dinner in the main dining room. Just show up between 5:30pm and 9:30pm and have dinner. This is a great thing for 2 reasons. First, I am no longer stuck possibly eating with people I have noting in common with, and… Continue

A non-pessimistic view on why the majority of SGL/Black Gay Men of Color will grow old alone.

An editorial by Cleon T. Day, III

Some of you might think that the first part of the title doesn’t match up with the latter part. How can stating “the majority of SGL/Black Gay Men of Color will grow old alone” be a non pessimistic view. Well for one thing in the closer picture in your life with the… Continue

Even though writer-actor-entertainer-former TV host Dale Guy Madison partially dedicates his incredibly likable and spiritually uplifting Memoir to “every little boy who dreamed of sparkle, glitter, and glamour while singing Supreme songs in the mirror, but was ashamed to let anyone know it”, there is no shame in his game. Do You Know Where You Are Going?

Do you get
What you're hoping for
When you look behind you
There's no open doors
What are you hoping for?
Do you know where you’re going to...?

The other theater company I formed the year after the inception of Umoja SaSa! was called Actors Against Drugs or AAD. My partner in that endeavor was Kay Lawal, and I met her while working as a singing trolley driver. Back then, there was a lot of downtown redevelopment happening in Baltimore at the Inner Harbor, and the trolley service gave tours of… Continue
